About this site

A calculator for the question people actually type: what time was it?

What this is

What time was it is an independent site for turning an offset into a clock time. You type 3 hours ago, 1 day ago, or 2 hours from now, and the page answers from the clock and timezone already set on your device.

The site also converts time units, measures the span between two datetimes, and counts down to a date, a holiday, or a short duration. Calculations run in your browser. They are for logs, reminders, and everyday planning, not for legal or scientific timestamps.

Who it is for

People who write incident notes, fill timesheets, reconstruct a chat, or set a follow-up and do not want to count across midnight by hand. If you already live in UTC and keep a proper timestamp, you may not need this. If you keep saying “about two hours ago” and then getting the hour wrong, you do.

Who runs it

The site is published by the operator of whattimewasit.app. There is no account system and no user-generated posts. For questions about the tools, privacy, or advertising, use the contact page or email contact@whattimewasit.app.

How the answers are made

Offsets are converted to milliseconds and applied to the current Date in your timezone. Month and year convenience figures on the difference page use 30-day months and 365-day years; those are labeled as such. Guides on this site explain the method and the usual mistakes. They are written for this product, not copied from other calculators.

Guides and indexed pages

The guides are the editorial part of the site: worked examples (midnight wrap, shift lookbacks, incident stamps), the conversion factors we actually use, and the limits we will not hide. Offset URLs such as /3-hours-ago are calculators for a specific question. Only a curated list of those URLs is offered to search engines, so the site is not a wall of near-duplicate pages.

There is no invented biography here. The publisher is the operator of this domain. Questions go to contact@whattimewasit.app.
