Limits
It is a civil-clock helper
What time was it turns an offset into a wall time using the clock and timezone already on your device. That is useful for logs, reminders, and “I cannot subtract across midnight”. It is not a time laboratory and it is not your employer’s clock.
Things the pages will not do
They will not insert leap seconds. Browser Date objects do not expose them as a separate unit.
They will not apply historical timezone rules your browser does not know. A time in 1952 in a country that changed offsets is not this product.
They will not compute named calendar months or business days. 1 month is 30 days. 1 year is 365 days. Both are labeled.
They will not freeze an instant in a shared URL. The URL stores the question. The answer moves with now.
They will not certify a timestamp for court, aviation, medicine, or stock-exchange matching. Use the clock those domains already specify.
Why the limits are public
A calculator site that pretends to be authoritative is how people file the wrong timesheet or the wrong incident start. The disclaimer exists because the arithmetic is exact and the input clock might not be. If your phone is five minutes fast, every offset is five minutes fast.
Guides on this site teach the method this product uses, including the uncomfortable parts. That is the original content. Other “hours ago” pages that hide the date line are answering a different, less useful question.
What to use instead
Legal or scientific time → a source those fields already trust.
Payroll periods → the employer’s calendar.
A single global launch instant → UTC written out, not an offset link.
Age, tenancy, or “same date last year” → a civil calendar, or two explicit dates on the difference page with the days row, not the years row.
Questions
If it will not do those things, why does the site exist?
Because reconstructing “3 hours ago” in your own timezone is a real, repeated task, and doing it in your head drops the date. That is the job. The limits keep that job from being mistaken for a different one.
